There is no way to zoom in on the waveform alone.

A possible workaround is to freeze the tracks and then copy over the selected clip portion onto a new track, but this is a tedious method if there are multiple edits needed.Īdditionally, it is a little trickier to make precision edits in Ableton Live, compared to Pro Tools. This saves you from loading CPU-intensive plugins and frees up your session for other purposes.įor podcast editors, who need to make destructive edits on vocal speech in order to correct mistakes, breaths, and pops, Ableton Live lags behind in efficiency. Pro Tools is equipped with the Audio Suite tool, which allows you to make destructive edits on specific segments of a clip, or the entire clip. While Ableton 10 makes navigation and editing a little easier, the waveform editing capabilities are still an aspect that can be much improved.įor instance, Ableton Live does not have a destructive audio processing tool. The Wavetable Synth, a brand new addition to Ableton 10, is a particularly feature-packed synth with endless possibilities.Ībleton Live can edit audio waveforms, but it lacks a few key features that would significantly improve its mixing efficiency.

The virtual instruments and synthesizers in Ableton are also a blast to work with. The customization can cut back on time-wasting clicks, and let you work on what you really need. While other programs might require several button clicks & menus for basic tasks, Ableton Live can quickly access Automation and Quantization with a few keystrokes.Īll of these features make Ableton Live a very efficient program to work with. There is plenty of user customization custom shortcuts, color-coding, custom menus, and complete control of MIDI mappings are all core functions of Ableton Live. There are very few external windows that bog down your view of the session, and most of what you need can be quickly accessed in a list. Let’s compare some of the strengths and drawbacks of each program, and then figure out which DAW will best suit your needs.Ībleton Live is widely praised for its minimal visual layout, plug-and-play ability, and unique interface. No matter the DAW, it is your skill, expertise and musical ear that have the biggest impact on the quality of the files that you export from your computer. That said, both programs are extremely effective tools for audio engineers and musicians. This also means that there are some functions that are a breeze in one program, but very frustrating or impossible in the other. However, while both Pro Tools and Ableton can essentially do the same thing, there are certain tasks each program was specifically designed to do well.

Oh, and if you are tempted by Ableton Intro, rather than spending $100 on the software alone, I would buy a Launchpad Mini or something like that and get software and hardware for about the same price. Both Ableton and Pro Tools are powerful, upper-level audio editing programs that work with MIDI, manipulate audio clips, host plugins, and export in a variety of formats.

I would echo another's comment though, that if you are using garageband and are looking at an upgrade, Logic X is just unbelievable value for money, and is worth about 10 times Ableton Intro for only twice the price. If it's purely for recording then Ableton isn't the best, but if you want to get into live work, clip based composing etc then Ableton has something to offer.

In terms of instruments and effects, I think garageband wins, but it does depend on what you want to use it for. It would allow you to do the kind of clip based, session view, live work that is Ableton's USP (although only 16 tracks and 8 scenes), but garageband has that Live Loops thing now which is a simplified version of the same.

It's definitely not an upgrade in all respects.
Ableton live lite vs garageband free#
It often comes free with hardware (although that might be live lite) which is fine but I'd be hard pressed to recommend it as a standalone purchase due to those limitations and the lack of instruments/effects/content.Ĭomparing it to garageband is tricky. Ableton intro is quite limited in terms of content and track count.
